There’s a moment in every Trinidadian childhood when the bush stops being a place your parents warn you about and becomes a place you want to be inside of. This piece is about that turning point — the surrender that is also a homecoming.
I stitched the leaves so they overlap the figure on purpose. In our landscape, nothing stays separate for long. Vines will find you. Rain will find you. The wild doesn’t ask permission, and eventually, you stop asking too.
For diaspora collectors, this piece often reads as memory — the version of home your body remembers even when your address changes. For collectors here, it tends to read as a mirror.
This piece is part of Embroidered x Nature, my current collection of hand- stitched botanical portraits.
