The Potamoi were the river gods — brothers to the Nereids, keepers of every stream that ever fed a sea. I like that they were plural. Our rivers here are plural too. The Marianne, the Yarra, the Caura, the Guanapo. Every one of them has a personality; every one of them will let you know it.
This piece leans masculine, elemental. The stitching moves like current. I wanted a feeling of something old sitting under the surface, watching whether you’re the kind of person who bathes with respect or the kind who leaves rubbish behind.
For anyone who has ever waded into a Trinidad river and felt watched — in the good way — this piece knows what you know.
This piece is part of Embroidered x Nature, my current collection of hand- stitched botanical portraits.
