Most of my work is really about this — the slow act of paying attention to a place until it starts talking back. This piece is the most direct version of that. A figure, a landscape, a listening.
I stitched it with the ear more than the eye. The threads follow rhythms rather than shapes; if you look closely you can almost see the pauses. Where the stitching goes quiet, the landscape is speaking. Where it thickens, the figure is answering.
For collectors who understand that a wall of art is really a wall of company — voices you have chosen to live with — this piece is a good, patient neighbour. It gets more interesting the longer you live with it.
This piece is part of Embroidered x Nature, my current collection of hand- stitched botanical portraits.
