Every river in Trinidad has a memory. Growing up here, you learn early that water isn’t only water — it’s where things happen, where things are said, where things are dreamt. This piece began as a photograph and became something else once the needle went in. I stitched the botanicals slowly, letting each thread find its place around the figure the way vines find their way around anything that stands still long enough. The gold I use isn't ornament — it’s the light that sits on our rivers in the late afternoon, the kind of light that makes you stop walking and just look.
There is a second piece in this pair, Dreaming of Love by the River III, and they were made in conversation with each other. Some collectors take them together; others let one live alone. Both feel right.
If you have ever stood at the edge of a river back home and felt something you couldn’t name, this piece is for you.
This piece is part of Embroidered x Nature, my current collection of hand- stitched botanical portraits.
