In the Garden of the Nereids

The Nereids were sea nymphs in Greek myth — the daughters of the old ocean, keepers of the water’s kinder moods. I’ve always felt they had cousins in our own waters. The women who sit at the river with their bucket. The ones who wade out at First Communion. The girl in your family whose hair has always looked like she came out of the sea.

I stitched this garden as a place where those two mythologies meet. The plants are Caribbean; the presiding spirit is older than any single island.
